“Maryland ACLU CAN” Launched in General Assembly to Fight for Civil Marriage Equality and Death Penalty Repeal!

As the 425^th session of the Maryland General Assembly begins, we’ve launched a new advocacy initiative called “Maryland ACLU CAN,” a constituents’ action network. The goal is to target both the state and federal seats of power to connect our members directly to our state and federal representatives. ACLU CAN empowers members to become constituent advocates for the civil liberties issues of the day through training, organized legislator visits, action alerts, and issue education. For the upcoming months, Maryland ACLU CAN will be focusing on issues relating to federal abuse of power, civil marriage equality, and death penalty repeal. See below to find out how you can take advantage of this action network to make a difference.

To coincide with the launch of this new initiative, the ACLU of Maryland is embarking on an exciting new endeavor. ACLU members are gathering with other constituent advocates to meet with legislators about two issues related to fundamental human dignity, equality and due process of law. Please join us for these lobby days by e-mailing lee@aclu-md.org to reserve your place.

We ask that you SAVE THE DATES and join us in Annapolis:

Monday, February 4, 2008, as we partner with Maryland Citizens Against State Executions and other advocates for death penalty repeal. We will begin at 5:00 pm with an ACLU gathering. At 5:30 pm, you will attend scheduled meetings with legislators, and;
Monday, February 11, 2008, as we partner with Equality Maryland in support of civil marriage equality. This lobby day event will begin at 4:30 pm with an ACLU gathering. At 5:00 pm we will join Equality Maryland for a rally on Lawyer’s Mall followed by meetings with legislators at 6:00 pm.

ACLU will schedule meetings with your legislators and provide you with talking points and training for lobby day. During the meetings, you will be partnered with other civil liberties supporters from your district. All you have to do is show up and speak about the issues with the passion and commitment we know you embody. Your voice and support can help bring about significant change.
