The ACLU has released a new documentary, “The Heart of the Matter: Maryland’s Same-Sex Couples Seek Justice for their Families,” which features three of our client couples in the marriage fairness case telling their personal stories. The documentary brings viewers into the heart of their personal lives, so that the issue of same-sex marriage is no longer just a headline on the television news or a controversial topic on the local talk radio station.
The issue is families and the unnecessary struggles that they face. The issue is children who are left vulnerable without protections available to other kids whose parents can get married. These issues are of the most basic kind – access to health insurance, inheriting property, obtaining U.S. citizenship, and making medical and death decisions about a loved one.
The documentary, which is 11 minutes long, was produced by the ACLU of Maryland, in collaboration with the Megaphone Project and Equality Maryland.
