The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland seeks a Campaign Strategist to help design and conduct sustained organizing campaigns to build civic engagement with a particular focus in supporting immigrant communities and their allies in efforts to ensure state and local law enforcement are focused on protecting communities rather than actively supporting federal immigration enforcement. The strategist will also be involved in supporting our broader civil rights and civil liberties organizing efforts.
The ACLU of MD is a non-partisan, non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The ACLU of MD is an affiliate of the national ACLU, a key defender of civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. The ACLU works in the courts, legislature and in communities to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and civil rights laws. The ACLU legal team litigates a broad range of constitutional cases in federal and state courts including, but not limited to, free speech, freedom of religion, LGBTQ+ rights, equal protection, Fourth Amendment guarantees, and privacy rights.
Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Engagement and Mobilization, the Campaign Strategist will be primarily responsible for building volunteer capacity within a sustained organizing program to help achieve the ACLU of MD’s strategic objectives and our movement building efforts. The Campaign Strategist will also work closely with our organization’s Communications, Public Policy and Legal departments, coalition partners and the ACLU National Office.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Help develop and implement strategies to organize Marylanders across the state to work toward achieving our strategic objectives, including developing campaign plans and turning goals and strategies into tactics, timelines, and metrics.
- Network within immigrant communities and help recruit, train, and manage an active volunteer pool.
- Provide activists and volunteers with information, guidance, and training to effectively lobby policymakers to pass legislation
- Represent the ACLU in an official capacity at meetings, public speaking engagements and with elected and public officials.
- Organize public events (rallies, town hall meetings, panel discussions, etc.) to mobilize immigrant communities, ACLU members, and the public at large
- Work with advocacy technology tools, including implementing the best use of volunteer management software, and the suite of People Power tools including text messaging, e-mail, and phone calls to increase engagement.
- In collaboration with the Communications Department, develop persuasive and informative outreach materials, including fact sheets, talking points, and sample letters-to-the-editor.
- Track programs’ progress to goals, produce reports and highlights and adjust plans as necessary.
- Identify and recruit potential clients for impact litigation and potential speakers and witnesses for public hearings and press conferences.
- Ensure that mobilization efforts are part of long-term organizing and capacity building for the ACLU of MD, including assisting in setting up and executing two-way communication channels for volunteers and recruiting and supporting volunteer leaders, volunteer teams, and coalition members.
The Campaign Strategist should possess the following experience and personal attributes:
- Individuals who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice or immigration system are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Personal commitment to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, goals, and programs, with an understanding of the range of civil rights and civil liberties issues and their implications.
- Fluent Spanish speaker.
- Five years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience, including field organizing, volunteer recruitment, and training.
- Political campaign strategy, lobbying, and outreach experience.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships with colleagues inside and outside the ACLU.
- A strong commitment to race equity, dismantling white supremacy and incorporating a structural power analysis in previous work, with knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances
- Demonstrated ability to create and sustain coalitions of diverse individuals.
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities with strong time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
- Capacity to self-start and follow through with a demonstrated ability to manage details with a minimum of direct supervision.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. A positive, confident, professional and outgoing presentation, and ability to speak in public along with facilitating meetings and trainings. (Bilingual, Spanish-English, a plus).
- Willingness to work occasional overtime or irregular hours, including some weekends.
- Must have a car and willingness to travel across the state, along with a current driver’s license.
- Proficiency with computers: Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet research in particular.
Salary ranges from $55-65k.
