The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Maryland seeks a dynamic, savvy Communications Coordinator. The ideal candidate will be an excellent writer, have an activist heart, and bring energy and creativity to defending civil rights. Spanish language fluency is required.

The Maryland affiliate of the ACLU has experienced significant growth as we have worked pro-actively against aggressive efforts to undermine civil rights and civil liberties. Our 23 staff members, along with hundreds of volunteers, work daily to achieve our mission using litigation, legislation, communications, and mobilization. We are dedicated to applying a racial equity lens to a broad range of constitutional issues that affect marginalized and oppressed individuals and communities in Maryland.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Writing: Draft press releases, blog posts, op-eds, social media content, web content, emails to members, action alerts, articles, profiles of ACLU-MD supporters and allies, and more.

Message Development: Develop messaging that helps ACLU-MD address and disrupt racial inequity and address issues at the root of systemic problems. Must be willing to listen, take guidance and collaborate with community members.

Content Production: Help create communications plans, talking points, one-pagers, and other informational materials.

Media Relations: Help field press calls, pitch stories to journalists, track ACLU-MD’s presence in the media, maintain and update press database, and monitor the media for opportunities to discuss the ACLU-MD’s work.

Social media and digital communications: Help strategize and schedule content for ACLU-MD’s social media channels. Serve as a back-up to shoot video and photographic content at legislative hearings and community events.

Public Outreach: Participate in Communications Team trainings for local activists and groups. Work collaboratively and share communications expertise and resources with impacted communities. Represent ACLU-MD at advocacy and community events across the state. Assist as needed with translation services at ACLU events.

Rapid response: Contribute to a rapid response effort involving breaking news and prepare in advance for future rapid response efforts.

Special project and publications: Assist development and communications staff in content production and publication of ACLU-MD’s Annual Report and Newsletters. Assist communications staff with special projects and campaign-specific communications.

Coordination: Coordinate with designers and other vendors to produce ACLU materials, help plan and execute logistics of community and press events, and other kinds of coordination.

Race Equity: Participate in affiliate race equity work in the organization, both internally and externally. 

Skills and Experience:

  • Exceptional writing ability and ability to write about complex legal and policy issues in different contexts for a variety of audiences.
  • 2-3 years of experience in nonprofit communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experiencia en el trabajo con comunidades donde el español es el primer idioma.

  • Strong commitment to racial equity, dismantling white supremacy and incorporating a structural power analysis into work, with knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.
  • Understanding of what drives activists and advocates to take action.
  • Willingness to take direction from directly-impacted people.
  • Strong editing skills, including copy editing, editing for tone, and big-picture edits.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work quickly and under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to fulfill occasional after-hours commitments, including on weekends.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Experience with photography and videography. Knowledge in Adobe Creative Cloud a plus.  

The position is based in Baltimore.

Salary & Benefits:

Salary is $50,000. Excellent benefits include two weeks paid vacation at time of hire (increasing to three weeks after one year, and four weeks after 5 years); 12 office holidays; medical and dental insurance for staff members, their dependents and spouse/domestic partner; life and long-term disability insurance; and 401(k) plan with employer match; direct exposure to cutting-edge civil liberties and civil rights work.
