During the 2012 legislative session, Maryland lawmakers failed to pass critical reconciliation and revenue bills. This resulted in the passage of a "doomsday" budget, which closed the deficit with major cuts to state services. A chart detailing the impact of this budget on each local jurisdiction shows the devastating reductions in funding for schools, community colleges, and other important services. Local governments will see a $128 million cut to K-12 funding due to the elimination of the Geographic Cost of Education Index (GCEI), a measure used when determining state aid for school funding. Community colleges will receive almost a $20 million cut, resulting in higher tuition for thousands of students statewide. These and other budgetary issues will be addressed during the special session, which begins on May 14 in Annapolis.
