Thank you for your interest in supporting the ACLU of Maryland! We have been fighting for civil rights and liberties for nearly a century, and your support ensures that we can continue to protect the values embodied in the Constitution and civil rights laws. Each year, thousands of Marylanders contact the ACLU for help, it is thanks to your generosity that we can respond to those calls and offer protection to those whose rights have been violated. Below, please find the answers to some common questions about donating to the ACLU of Maryland.

What is the difference between a membership and a donation?

What is the difference between a membership and a donation?

The ACLU of Maryland consists of two sister entities: the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland and the ACLU Foundation of Maryland.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland is a 501(c)4, which means that that contributions are not tax-deductible and can be used for political lobbying. Membership contributions always fund the Union. If you are already a member and wish to further contribute to the ACLU’s political activities, you can make an additional gift here. The ACLU Foundation of Maryland is a 501(c)3 charity, which means that contributions are tax-deductible and cannot be used for political lobbying. Gifts to the Foundation fund our legal work and public education efforts.

Can I make an automatic monthly contribution?

Yes! We are deeply grateful for sustaining gifts. You can set up a monthly online contribution to either the Union or the Foundation, or create an automatic payment with your bank to mail a check to the ACLU of Maryland every month.

What is the difference between donating to the ACLU of Maryland and the National ACLU?

At the ACLU of Maryland, we work closely with our colleagues at the National ACLU to defend civil liberties in our state and across the country. Gifts to the ACLU of Maryland are shared with the National ACLU, and vice versa. Either way, we are deeply grateful for your support, but contributing directly to the ACLU of Maryland helps us to develop a relationship with our local supporters.
