Baltimore, MD - Yesterday, a federal judge in Maryland ordered the immediate release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from immigration detention. This ruling affirms a fundamental principle: no one should be held without a lawful basis.
Abrego Garcia’s case highlights how deeply our immigration system can fail to protect basic constitutional rights, including due process and humane treatment. A judge found that Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not have a valid removal order and had been holding him without legal authority.
We welcome this decision and the court’s clear statement that the rule of law must be respected. True justice requires more than release. It requires confronting a system that allows wrongful detentions and harms families, communities, and civil rights. The ACLU of Maryland remains committed to defending due process, uplifting the humanity of every Marylander, and protecting immigrant rights across our state.
Justice is not optional. It is a right.
