Annapolis, MD – On Tuesday, February 24, advocates will provide testimony on a bill that would ban Marylanders from being racially profiled by law enforcement and limit federal abuses by federal agents escalated by the Trump Administration. SB 854/HB 1262 would codify existing constitutional protections against racial profiling through language explicitly forbidding racial profiling by law enforcement and make it clear that federal agents seeking to rely on Maryland law as a basis for their activities are subject to the same Maryland standards as state and local law enforcement.
2025 was the deadliest year for Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) in two decades, with 16 shootings by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers since July 2025, including one in Glen Burnie.
The ACLU of Maryland is calling for a clean passage of SB 854/HB 1262. These commonsense measures are critical to protect Black and brown, immigrant communities by safeguarding Marylanders from racial discrimination and targeting based on their identity.
