Bio

Hiruy Hadgu is an activist and community organizer with a record of bold advocacy for equity and justice in Howard County, Maryland. His work spans civil rights, immigrant justice, police accountability, free expression, and equitable land-use and education policy, consistently centering the voices of marginalized communities. He is a fierce advocate for the First Amendment and the right of every person to speak, dissent, and be heard.

He is a co-founder of Indivisible Howard County and has served as an at-large member of the Howard County NAACP. Following the murder of George Floyd, he co-founded the Police Accountability Task Force of Howard County, advocating reforms including a funded body-camera program. He has also served as a founding member of Progressive Democrats of Howard County and in leadership roles with the PTA Council of Howard County and the Howard County Citizens Association.

Hiruy holds a Master's in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences and an MBA. He lives in Fulton with his wife and two children, who inspire his ongoing work toward a more just and equitable community.
