Law enforcement should not be masked. When government agents detain, arrest, or use force, the people they affect deserve to know who they are.

The ACLU of Maryland is committed to uplifting the humanity of every Marylander. That begins with transparency and accountability from those entrusted with power. Identification is a basic condition of public trust. When an officer hides their face and name, communities cannot tell a real officer from an impersonator, and people harmed by misconduct have no way to seek justice.

Maryland and its local governments have acted to affirm transparent, accountable policing and to protect the dignity and safety of the people who live here.

This lawsuit is an attempt to shield federal agents from the same standards we expect of every other officer who serves our communities. We stand with Maryland and local leaders who are working to keep our communities safe, informed, and free from fear.

The ACLU of Maryland will keep fighting for a Maryland where every person is treated with dignity, and where those entrusted with power are visible, identifiable, and accountable to the people they serve.

ACLU Maryland Statement on DHS Purchase of Hagerstown Warehouse for ICE Facility

The ACLU of Maryland is deeply concerned by the federal government’s decision to purchase, at a cost of $102 million, a massive warehouse near Hagerstown, Maryland, to use as a detention facility. The purchase is part of reckless and unconscionable plan to more than double the capacity of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to jail people suspected of immigration violations around the country.

ACLU of Maryland Statement on ICE's Lawless Surge in Frederick

We are alarmed by video and eyewitness accounts describing federal agents using excessive force against people engaged in nonviolent protest, and using vehicles as battering rams to disperse community members who had gathered to lawfully observe and document ICE's presence.
