In the past seven months, the newly all-white Board has unveiled a political agenda to censor books that affirm Black and LGBTQIA+ experiences while blocking approval of a state-endorsed English Language Arts curriculum that the local Board spent over a year developing, just weeks before the school year begins.

The decision could have far-reaching consequences for public schools’ ability to create an inclusive and welcoming environment that reflects the diversity of their communities, as well schools’ ability to implement any secular lesson plan that may trigger religious objections.

On November 12, the Appellate Court of Maryland dismissed a lawsuit brought on behalf of families with children in Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPSS) challenging the State’s chronic failure to provide sufficient funding to ensure the city’s students receive an adequate education.
